2 die in Oahu

March 19, 2010
Separate traffic accidents claimed two lives last night on Oahu, one of them a 13-year-old boy.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., a single-car crash on Pali Highway killed a 36-year-old Kaneohe man.

Five hours earlier, Kaaikalau Kamakea-Naluai, 13, of Waimanalo, died after he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck during a two-vehicle collision on Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua.

Police arrested the boy's aunt on suspicion of negligent homicide because she allegedly attempted an illegal U-turn that put the pickup in the path of a car that broadsided the vehicle.

The impact caused the boy to be ejected. He was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition but died an hour later. A 12-year-old boy who also was in the truck's bed was not ejected but suffered serious injuries.

On the Pali Highway, police said speed appeared to be a factor as a Kaneohe-bound sedan left the road about 275 feet northeast of the Pali Lookout off-ramp and struck a sign and then a tree. Police said the impact caused extensive damage to the driver's side of the car.

Bryan Cheplic of the city's Emergency Services Department said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:03 a.m.

A passenger in the car, a 27-year-old man from Florida, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

Police have yet to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Census comes to Hawaii

The Maui News - The “Hawaii Counts” census van will visit Maui communities this week to promote the 2010 U.S. census. The van will offer giveaways of census promotional items, informational displays and a mini replica of the “Portrait of America” display that is touring the country.
The van’s first stop was a kickoff event with Mayor Charmaine Tavares on Monday at the Kalana O Maui building, where she signed a proclamation recognizing March as “2010 Census Month.” Tavares noted that census results are used by the federal government to determine how to distribute more than $400 million in funding to the states and can help determine where facilities like schools, roads and public transportation are located. “We need everyone, no matter where you live in our county, to participate,” she said.
Questionnaires for the 2010 census are now being delivered to homes without mailboxes. Mailing of the forms will begin March 15, and residents are asked to send back the questionnaires by Census Day, April 1. Census takers will begin going door to door in early April to assist residents who did not mail back their forms. The census van previously toured Moloka‘i and will be visiting sites around Maui through March 15.

The Hollow Earth Theory

Popularized by adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi literature, Hollow Earth theories advance the notion that Earth has a hollow interior and, possibly, a habitable inner surface. Although direct knowledge of Earth's structure extends only 15 m (24 km) down—the deepest humans have ever drilled—the Hollow Earth hypothesis has long been refuted by the modern understanding of planet formation. However, in ancient times, subterranean realms seemed plausible and became linked with what religious concepts? More... Discuss

Quote of the Day
I dare say I am compelled, unconsciously compelled, now to write volume after volume, as in past years I was compelled to go to sea, voyage after voyage. Leaves must follow upon each other as leagues used to follow in the days gone by, on and on to the appointed end, which, being truth itself, is one—one for all men and for all occupations.
Joseph Conrad
(1857-1924)
