2 die in Oahu

March 19, 2010
Separate traffic accidents claimed two lives last night on Oahu, one of them a 13-year-old boy.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., a single-car crash on Pali Highway killed a 36-year-old Kaneohe man.

Five hours earlier, Kaaikalau Kamakea-Naluai, 13, of Waimanalo, died after he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck during a two-vehicle collision on Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua.

Police arrested the boy's aunt on suspicion of negligent homicide because she allegedly attempted an illegal U-turn that put the pickup in the path of a car that broadsided the vehicle.

The impact caused the boy to be ejected. He was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition but died an hour later. A 12-year-old boy who also was in the truck's bed was not ejected but suffered serious injuries.

On the Pali Highway, police said speed appeared to be a factor as a Kaneohe-bound sedan left the road about 275 feet northeast of the Pali Lookout off-ramp and struck a sign and then a tree. Police said the impact caused extensive damage to the driver's side of the car.

Bryan Cheplic of the city's Emergency Services Department said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:03 a.m.

A passenger in the car, a 27-year-old man from Florida, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

Police have yet to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Amazons

The Amazons are a mythical nation of female warriors whose place in Greek mythology may have been inspired by Sarmatian warrior women who, according to ancient historians, went to battle alongside their men. Archaeological evidence seems to confirm this theory; a quarter of the Sarmatian military graves that have been discovered belong to women, many of whom were buried with bows. What extreme form of body modification were Amazons rumored to practice in order to improve their marksmanship? More... Discuss

Shortly after Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon in 1830, he officially founded The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints—also known as the Mormon Church—in Fayette, New York. The church flourished but was forced to relocate frequently. It was violently expelled from Missouri, and a mob killed Smith in Illinois in 1844. His successor, Brigham Young, led followers to Utah three years later. Tensions with the US government continued to escalate, culminating in what war? More... Discuss
