2 die in Oahu

March 19, 2010
Separate traffic accidents claimed two lives last night on Oahu, one of them a 13-year-old boy.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., a single-car crash on Pali Highway killed a 36-year-old Kaneohe man.

Five hours earlier, Kaaikalau Kamakea-Naluai, 13, of Waimanalo, died after he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck during a two-vehicle collision on Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua.

Police arrested the boy's aunt on suspicion of negligent homicide because she allegedly attempted an illegal U-turn that put the pickup in the path of a car that broadsided the vehicle.

The impact caused the boy to be ejected. He was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition but died an hour later. A 12-year-old boy who also was in the truck's bed was not ejected but suffered serious injuries.

On the Pali Highway, police said speed appeared to be a factor as a Kaneohe-bound sedan left the road about 275 feet northeast of the Pali Lookout off-ramp and struck a sign and then a tree. Police said the impact caused extensive damage to the driver's side of the car.

Bryan Cheplic of the city's Emergency Services Department said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:03 a.m.

A passenger in the car, a 27-year-old man from Florida, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

Police have yet to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
